Escaping an Assassination Attempt
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reportedly escaped three assassination attempts since Russia invaded Ukraine last week.
Zelensky was previously reported to have managed to evade the assassination attempt.
As the Times of London reports, Zelensky survived after war-fighting Russians provided Ukrainian government officials with intelligence about the planned attack.
"I can say that we received information from (Russia's Federal Security Service), which does not want to take part in this bloody war," the Ukrainian Ministry of National Security and Defense said in a statement quoted by Fox News, Friday (4/3/2022).
The report from the Times of London revealed that the Wagner Group, a Russian-backed paramilitary force, was behind the two assassination attempts.
Russia is also believed to deny involvement if the group succeeds in killing Zelensky.
"They're going in there on a very well-known mission, something Russia wants to deny. Beheading heads of state is a huge mission," the diplomatic source said in the report.
The European Union itself is supported by the Secretary of State of the United States (US), Antony Blinken has sanctioned the Wagner group and his colleagues last December, for serious human rights violations.
These include torture and extrajudicial proceedings, summary or arbitrary executions and killings, and destabilizing activity in a number of countries including Libya, Syria, the Central African Republic and the Ukrainian Donbas.
Former US intelligence officials speculated that these mercenaries may have been operating in Kiev for months.
That's because Russian President Vladimir Putin needs field intelligence in the Ukrainian capital before the planned invasion began last week.
