Using earphones to listen to music or watch movies has become commonplace among people, especially millennials and gen Z. Usually people use earphones while in vehicles or public places so they can freely listen to what they want without disturbing other people. But did you know that using earphones for a long time can cause you to lose your hearing function?
As quoted from World of Buzz, this unfortunate incident was felt by a 28-year-old woman who was forced to become momentarily deaf due to hearing loss in one of her ears. This woman named Xiao Jing from Taiwan reportedly used her earphones to listen to the drama series she watched on her way home after work every day. This is done to relieve stress from his work. After a month of doing this habit, Xiao Jing felt that something was wrong. He couldn't hear the sound from the earphone to his left. Xiao Jing twice tried to replace the earphones with new ones but to no avail. He still couldn't hear anything from his left ear.
Realizing that it wasn't the earphones he wore, Xiao Jing immediately went to see the doctor at Luodong Bo-ai Hospital. After being examined, the doctor said that Xiao Jing had Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSHL) or sudden hearing loss which is also known as sudden deafness.
Fortunately Xiao Jing immediately got his hearing checked. If not, the doctor said that Xiao might never be able to use his left ear again.

After receiving treatment with steroids and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), Xiao Jing finally regained 80% of hearing in her left ear. Doctor Zhang who works with Xiao Jing said that the cause of her sudden deafness is largely unknown, but it could be related to stress, viral infections, autoimmune diseases, drugs, trauma, or tumors.
The doctor also strongly recommended that anyone who experiences this symptom for three days should immediately see a doctor because sudden deafness can not only be experienced by parents, but young children who are always tired and wake up late can also experience it. Those who have experienced this are expected to rest more and sleep longer.
