Who is wrong, the government or the people who are demonstrating? Society is divided into two when they have to have an opinion on this matter. There are those who think that the demonstration must be chaotic so that the public will be heard. However, there are also those who think that demonstrations only make it difficult.
Considering that the issue of demonstrations has flared up since the issue of the Job Creation Act, The Trial of the Chicago 7 could be a film qartulad that can be enjoyed by us as Indonesians today. This is because Indonesia and the United States basically have the same social problems. So, when watching this film, we look in the mirror.
Apart from the hot issue, this film also attracts attention from other aspects. One of the most striking is the line of cast filled by famous Hollywood stars. Interestingly, in this film you can see a "rare" phenomenon, namely the serious appearance of Sacha Baron Cohen, the Borat actor in the Borat film .
So, can the film The Trial of the Chicago 7 live up to expectations for a serious film that is still able to entertain the audience? Come on, see the typical KINCIR reviews below!
A Dramatic Biopic
The Trial of the Chicago 7 is a biopic about the trials of the Chicago Seven. For your information, "Chicago Seven" is the seven people (previously eight) who are considered to have triggered rioting demonstrations at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
The demonstration occurred because of President Lyndon B. Johnson's Vietnam War policies. In fact, the United States has been in this war since the 1950s. However, since Johnson took office, the addition of troops has become increasingly significant. The president also increased taxes to finance the war.
Already stifled by all the conscription for war and policies that were increasingly pro-war, many Americans at that time were stifling. Protests also echoed everywhere and one of the most phenomenal was the demonstration of the Democratic National Convention.
Biopic films are basically based on true stories, but with bad ingredients. Most biopics tend to be boring history lessons. Fortunately, this film doesn't fall into that category. The Trial of the Chicago 7 makes the true story more dramatic and more striking.
Too Real and Realistic
Overall, this film takes the point of view of eight characters, namely Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Tom Hayden, Rennie Davis (Alex Sharp), David Dellinger. Lee Winer, John Froines, and Bobby Seale. Bobby Seale was then separated for some reason so they became seven.
Everything in this film looks very natural and is not made up. The Trial of the Chicago 7 does n't just make these characters into heroic figures. On several occasions, you have been irritated by them for being clumsy (like Tom Hayden), not playing pretty in court (like Bobby Seale), and so on. The Trial of the Chicago 7 makes viewers think realistically; demonstrations are very important to maintain democracy, but not all demonstrators were right.
This film depicts a natural demonstration as it is. The police who were insecure first because of their duty to secure the public and some of the demonstrators who took part in the demonstration were just because of the hype . Those who understand the essence of demonstrations, such as the Chicago 7s, certainly cannot prevent the rioting. Moreover, there was a 'mispronunciation' from one of the Chicago 7s which accidentally actually triggered a riot.
This condition is certainly related to what has always happened in Indonesia and other multicultural countries. Because it is so multicultural, the issues lead to everywhere, including the issue of racism. Some took part in the demonstration because they wanted to criticize the government. There is also a demo to find a boyfriend, and there is a demo because they feel that they are a minority.
More closely related to Indonesia today, in the late 1960s, hippie culture was again becoming a trend among young Americans. Hippies is a term for anti-mainstream young people who worship freedom, but also don't want to be bound by the rules so sometimes they go too far. Most of them become addicted to drugs and free sex and don't really think about the future.
In Indonesia, these ' hippies' are often discussed, especially since there are social media that increasingly support their thinking. People who are sometimes insinuated as SJW, twilighters, libertards, and so on, are sometimes considered to be too rebellious without knowing the essence, although it is still debatable.
So, even though this film is set in the 1960s, it feels like it is really happening in Indonesia today. It is as if history is repeating itself. Hence, seeing the phenomenon of demonstrations and protests against the government that is rife, this film is very relevant .
